As flood risks in Europe increase, there is a need for improving flood risk management. Floods can be managed in different ways. You can for example stay away from floods, protect yourself with dikes or evacuate in case of danger. In several countries in Europe there is a shift going on from a focus on flood protection to a mixed approach that includes other flood risk strategies.
Good governance can support the implementation of flood risk management strategies. In our perspective, good governance needs to support the implementation of multiple strategies at the same time (resilience) and needs to be adapted to the specific situation in a country or region (appropriateness).
